From What If to How Then?
PAF – Performing Arts Forum, St Erme, France
During September 2014, we – Nikolaus Gansterer, Mariella Greil and Emma Cocker – undertook an intensive research residency at PAF, Performing Arts Forum, for the purposes of applying pressure to the discursive, methodological and epistemological questions and concerns emergent within the project Choreo-graphic Figures: Deviations from the Line, extending the lines of thought and action initiated during our recent Summer Method Lab (July-August 2014, Vienna). Using a series of forthcoming conferences as critical leverage and provocation, the aim of this residency was to revisit materials and reflections emerging through the research process, shaping content towards a performative format for public sharing. During our residency we devised and presented a work-in-progress performance-lecture comprising live drawing, visual presentation and spoken word (17 September 2014) to fellow residents at PAF, inviting critical feedback in relation to our research findings and mode of presentation. Central to this phase of the project was the development of two key interrelated concepts: the notion of figuring and the (choreo-graphic) figure, which have since been elaborated further within the context of research publications (See On Process and On Notation).
